Spend a day learning the ins and outs of creating a photo book with Susan Hayre Thelwell. This workshop blends the technical workflow with the artistic concepts of book design to teach you the best practices to produce Blurb books that you can use for promotional materials for portfolio reviews, gifts for clients, or memories for the family.
Through lecture, discussion, personal practice, and critique, this workshop will cover the necessary basics needed to complete a photo book using Blurb.com. As various technical aspects are covered Susan will also discuss the importance of sequencing and editing your work for a book using student images as examples and looking at classic photo books.
Technical topics include:
o File Type and size
o Color Spaces
o Proofing a book
o Using text
o Covers and dust jackets
Students should bring 30 -40 digital files from one body of work, or smaller quantities from multiple portfolios. Images will be used to start your own photo book during class. Students should also bring a portable hard drive in order to save the book you begin in this workshop. HCP will provide computers, however if you prefer to bring your laptop please download Blurb Booksmart (from Blurb.com) before arriving to class.
Basic knowledge of computers is essential. This class is appropriate for all levels beyond beginner.
The class includes a boxed lunch.
About the Instructor
Born on the edge of the Chihuahuan desert in southwest Texas, photographer and educator Susan Hayre Thelwell celebrates every moment she spends in Maine. Now based in New Mexico, she works on long-term projects about culture when not teaching workshops in photographic technology across the country. Susan won Honorable Mention in 2009 in the Photography.Book.Now competition sponsored by Blurb for her design of her project Mitchell's Lot. Her work was included in the 2009 Portland Museum of Art Biennial and is part of the permanent collections of the Portland Museum of Art, the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, New Mexico Art in Public Places, and the Centro Fotografico Alvarez Bravo in Oaxaca. This is her second year teaching at the workshops.
