Beginning Photography: Composition

Level: Beginning
Gain confidence in your ability to create great photographic images by utilizing the basic rules of composition. This four-day course will cover such terminology and guidelines as rule of thirds, leading lines and orientation. You will also become acquainted with different photographic styles such as portrait, landscape, documentary and conceptual. Discover how to choose the most effective background for your subject as well as how to frame your final image for maximum impact. A group critique of class assignments will strengthen your ability to recognize an image that successfully uses the basics of visual composition.
This course includes outside-of-class assignments to practice what you’ve learned.

This course includes:
• Rule of thirds, leading lines and orientation of image
• Introduction to different photographic styles including portrait, landscape, documentary and conceptual
• Choosing a background
• Hands-on practice
• Feedback on your images
What to bring to class:
• Digital Camera (SLR or point-and-shoot)
• Flash drive
Pre-requisites:
Students taking this class should have basic knowledge of how their camera works.
The following HCP courses are recommended pre-requisites:
Digital Camera Basics or Beginning Photography: Camera
