2008 Fellowship Exhibition - Mike Osborne "On Location: Beijing"
September 12 - October 26, 2008

Mike Osborne is the recipient of one of two HCP Fellowship Awards in 2007, granting him a cash award of $2,000 and a solo exhibition at the Houston Center for Photography. This year´s selection was juried by Anjali Gupta, Editor-in-Chief of Artlies magazine, critic and video producer and Rachel Cook, artist, writer and independent curator. In the work of Austin-based artist Mike Osborne, the urban landscape serves as much more than a backdrop. Here, the city functions as both subject and object, content and context. Mixing the documentary material of traditional street photography with the refined formal tendencies of more premeditated modes of image making, Osborne peels away the layers of a city—be it Austin, Beijing, Los Angeles or Taipei—unearthing the socio-cultural mélange that defines contemporary urban experience.

Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, September 12 from 6-8pm. Prior to the opening, the artist will speak about his series from 5:30-6pm.

This year´s Fellowship Exhibition is supported by an Anonymous donor. The artist´s project received additional support from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.
