Houston, TX - Houston Center for Photography in conjunction with the exhibition Human Nature, is proud to present two evenings of special film screenings.
Join us for exhibition related documentaries, Environmental Justice in the USA and King Corn (April 17, 7pm) and Garbage Warrior (May 1, 7pm).
Tammy Cromer-Campbell’s film Environmental Justice in East Texas tells the stories of people living next to EPA sanctioned deep injection wells. The chemicals that were brought to Winona, Texas migrated under the town and surrounding farms causing a myriad of health problems and deaths.
With Fruit of the Orchard | Environmental Justice in East Texas successfully published as a book and knowing that environmental justice issues are not limited to Winona, Tammy Cromer-Campbell documents other communities struggling with environmental injustice. She starts with Winona, TX, Houston’s ship channel, Rivercrest, North East Texas coal strip mines, and De Berry, TX. It's her hope that by revealing these injustices, including deaths, real change will occur.
In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the east coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America's most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat-and how we farm.
Shot over three years in the USA, India and Mexico, Garbage Warrior (directed by Oliver Hodge) is a feature-length documentary film telling the epic story of maverick architect Michael Reynolds, his crew of renegade house builders from New Mexico, and their fight to introduce radically different ways of living. A snapshot of contemporary geo-politics and an inspirational tale of triumph over bureaucracy, Garbage Warrior is above all an intimate portrait of an extraordinary individual and his dream of changing the world.
