About HCP / News

HOUSTON, TX - Houston Center for Photography is proud to announce the exhibition Teenagers: Portraits of Identity and Expression, including photography by Natan Dvir, Martine Fougeron, Alison Malone, Rania Matar, and Nancy Newberry. The exhibition will be on view at HCP in the Main Gallery from May 6 - June 19, 2011 with an artist talk at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 6, preceding the opening reception.

Teenagers: Portraits of Identity and Expression includes the work of five artists, collaborating with teenagers to create portraits of the individuals, their interests, and the environments which they seek and create. Natan Dvir creates portraits of Muslim teenagers living in Israel at the age of eighteen in his series Eighteen. These large scale images confront the viewer while inviting them into their personal story. Martine Fougeron photographs her two teenage sons and their friends throughout their high school experience. Alison Malone focuses on teenage members of the Daughters of Job, a Masonic Youth organization for girls and young women requiring blood relations to a Master Mason. Rania Matar makes portraits of individual teenagers and the rooms they create in her series Girls In Their Rooms. Nancy Newberry explores teenage identity and culture in her series MUM.

These five photographers create portraits of teenagers in their environments around the globe including Israel, New York, France, Lebanon, Massachusetts, and Texas. The works are vastly different yet have the common goal to give teenagers a voice and to explore the issues that they confront today.
