About HCP / News

Houston, TX – Houston Center for Photography is proud to announce its 2008 Juried Membership Exhibition which opens on August 8th and
continues through September 7th, 2008. The opening reception will take place in all of HCP’s galleries on Friday, August 8th from 6-8pm.
Individual Artist Talks are scheduled for Saturday, August 9th at 2pm and Thursday August 14th at 7pm and will also be held in the galleries.
All events are free and open to the public.

Now in its 26th year, the Juried Membership Exhibition provides all HCP members with the chance to exhibit recently created bodies of work; the exhibition continues to present the most innovative trends in and approaches to photography while showcasing the diverse photographic work of HCP’s members. This year’s juror Dr. Alison Nordström selected 30 artists from a group of over 200 to exhibit. From local artists to international, this year’s exhibition showcases the broad spectrum of subject matter/content and processes that HCP’s members possess. “I am happy to report that photography as an art form is not only alive and well in Texas (and in the many other places from which HCP members hail) but is perhaps more varied in appearance and intention than it has ever been in its short but intense history,” said Dr. Norström.

This year’s Curator’s Commendation recipients are HCP Members Derek Coté (Richmond, VA) and Krista Steinke (Bethlehem, PA). Also included in this exhibition is Houstonian Beth Block’s work. Ms. Block (1967-2008), a multi-media artist working in film, video, photography, digital media, and installation, was a member of HCP’s Collector’s Print Program and was a frequent contributor to HCP’s auctions.
