HCP Announces Madeline Yale as New Executive Director and Curator
Houston, TX – The Board of Directors of the Houston Center for Photography are pleased to appoint Madeline Yale to the position of Executive Director and Curator after a six month national search for an Executive Director. Ms. Yale, originally from Portland, Maine, relocated to Houston in February 2006 to take the position of HCP Program Director. After the resignation of HCP’s former Executive Director, Allison Hunter, Madeline Yale was appointed to the position of Interim Executive Director in October 2006. During her six month tenure as Interim Executive Director, Ms. Yale led HCP into its 25th Anniversary year, embarking on a strategic planning project in concert with the Board of Directors which led to the development of a new mission statement, organizational directives, and community collaborations. “It is an exciting time for HCP; the 25th anniversary celebration marks the initiation of a new chapter in the organization’s history. It is an honor to steward HCP into the future, encouraging new and established audiences to celebrate contemporary photography through the vehicle of HCP’s outstanding programming.”
Ms. Yale holds BA with honors from Skidmore College, a post-graduate certificate from Sotheby’s in London, and a MA in Photographic Studies with Distinction from the Norwich School of Art & Design, England, where she also taught history of photography and photographic theory. Before coming to Houston, she was a freelance archivist and curator in the US and abroad, and managed the photographic estate of American photographer Todd Webb.
As Program Director, Ms. Yale collaborated with HCP’s Exhibitions Committee to curate a series of innovative projects including Trace (visions of Katrina); Silver, a retrospective exhibition honoring the 25th Anniversary of HCP; and 6-Pack from Mexico City. Ms. Yale’s latest curatorial endeavor, Antennae, looks to contemporary methodologies applied to photography and related media and explores trajectories for their future. Antennae opens on April 27 and runs through June 3, 2007 and will be preceded by a panel discussion at the University of Houston on April 24.
HCP will be recruiting a Development Associate to assist with fundraising and events in the near future.
