Collaborations

HCP's Collaborations program is a semester-long program that provides students with tools to continue their photographic career, creates awareness of different career opportunities in the field, and provides an opportunity to experience the planning of an exhibition first-hand. The program welcomes high-schools students that have an interest in photography as an art form.

Students build confidence as they learn to present their work to others through regular critique and discussions. Through regular meetings with HCP staff and guest speakers with photography-related careers, students share ideas and learn about artistic, curatorial and commercial aspects of the art world and learn about photography's history and role in daily live. These meetings take place at HCP and in the community. Once the students select a theme for the exhibition, HCP forms collaborations with photographers and professionals to inform the students about their chosen subject and to aid them with the development of their portfolio, artist's statement and resume. The program culminates with a final exhibition of the student's work and fosters the student's public speaking and presentation skills through the vehicle of artist talks which are attended by the general public in HCP's galleries.

Collaborations began in 2003 under the guidance of Ray Carrington, III, photography instructor at Jack Yates High School, a low-income at-risk high school in Houston’s Third Ward; and David Veselka, the longtime chair of the photography department at The Kinkaid School, a Houston area private school.
