Learning Center

The Learning Center at HCP opened its doors in 2006 and now offers over 250 workshops to the general public each year. Workshops are held on-site in the critique room and digital darkroom as well as off-site in the field or at the facility of one of our partner organizations. HCP's educational calendar, is published quarterly and has information about the many workshops we offer for both film and digital photographers of all levels.

HCP members receive a 25% discount on all workshops.

Education is at the core of HCP's mission. Through outreach programs, workshops, lectures, portfolio reviews, and artist talks, HCP endeavors to foster the artistic growth of the community by educating people about photographic techniques and professional practices.

John Cleary Library
he John Cleary Reference Library is home to over 2,500 publications and periodicals on photography. A collection that began in 1982, the library was dedicated in 2008 to the late John Cleary, HCP’s Advisory Council member who fostered photographic connoisseurship.

Digital Darkroom
HCP's digital darkroom is home to 9 iMac workstations which serve HCP's educational workshops. The lab is available to the public while classes are not taking place.

Critique Room
Our critique room serves as a classroom, a space for portfolio reviews, a conference room, and a screening room. The Critique Room is equipped with museum shelves, balanced lighting for portfolio reviews, tungsten lighting for photo shoots, and an automated projection screen.

The Critique Room is available for rent for $15/hour. Availability subject to HCP educational and exhibition programming. Please contact Juliana Forero to reserve this space.

Learning Center Gallery
The Learning Center Gallery displays work year-round from HCP’s outreach programs, membership exhibitions, Learning Center students and exhibitions that seek to educate about current issues, artistic practice, and process. Corresponding exhibitions include PictureThis! with MD Anderson Cancer Center patients and Texas Children's Hospital, and Collaborations, an exhibition created and curated by participating students from Houston-area high schools.

HCP also showcases the work of its students and teachers in the annual exhibition Learning Curve.

Special thanks to the Houston Endowment, the Institute of Museum and Library Services and numerous individual donors for helping to create the Learning Center and supporting HCP’s ongoing educational initiatives.
