Artist Photographer Member Valeria Ravier
Artist Statement: Reality is a fiction. I learned it early in life, and it was through photography. When I was a child, there was a cardboard box with photographs in my house. I usually spent a lot of time watching the images. There were two in particular which caught my attention. In one of them I was a baby, sitting next to another baby who looked exactly like me. In the other one I was a little girl, mounted alone on a horseback. I learned later that my father had been responsible for supporting both fictions. The first image had been a multiple exposure. In the second one he was behind the horse, holding me in a subtle way. In these series I have revisited those memories, constructing a possible fiction of my body. By combining important elements of my subjectivity -light and shadow, black and white, memories of zebras, skin and stripes-, I have composed either almost abstract storyboards (which may be considered chapters of a possible autobiography), or minimal self-portraits. Artist Biography: Valeria Ravier is an Argentinean photographer, born in Buenos Aires, who has lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for more than twenty years.
With formal education in Anthropology and Psychoanalysis, Valeria explores the relations between Photography and those areas.
Her most recent series, Zebra Project, was built from memories of her childhood and inspired by Victor Vasarely´s work.
At the moment she divides her time between Houston and Sao Paulo.
