Houston, TX – Houston Center for Photography (HCP) announces its 2010 Photography Fellowship Competition Recipients, Matt Eich (Norfolk, VA) and Scott Dalton (Houston, TX). Each individual was awarded $2,000 and will exhibit new work in solo exhibitions at HCP from May 7 – June 20, 2010. Dalton is the recipient of the Carol Crow Memorial Fellowship and Matt Eich is the recipient of the HCP Fellowship. Brian Paul Clamp, Owner and Director of ClampArt, juried the fellowship selection. ClampArt is a gallery in Chelsea specializing in modern and contemporary art with an emphasis on photography; the gallery mounts ten to fifteen exhibitions per year featuring the work of emerging and mid-career artists.
Clamp also selected six (6) 2010 Fellowship Honorable Mention recipients whose work will be included in an online exhibition concurrent with the 2010 Fellowship recipients’ gallery shows at HCP. The 2010 Fellowship Honorable Mention recipients are Katie Koti (Providence, RI), Ian van Coller (Bozeman, MT), Toni Pepe (Winthrop, MA), Bryan Schutmaat (Houston, TX), Isa Leshko (Houston, TX), and Derek Rankins (Houston, TX).
About the 2010 Fellowship recipients:
Matt Eich has been photographing the daily lives of Southeastern Ohio's poorest residents for the past three years. From a thriving area buoyed by its natural resources to one abandoned and forgotten by the corporations that had once provided employment for thousands, Eich documents the struggles of people facing living in financial crisis and facing worse times ahead.
Scott Dalton's body of work, Macondo: Journeys in García Márquez’s Colombia, explores the people and places of Columbia that inspired the author's work. In García Márquez’s novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, the fictional town of Macondo represents what he says "...is not a place but a state of mind that allows one to see what they want, and see it how they want." Working with this idea, Dalton's photographs reveal and explore contemporary Columbian identity through the visual lens of magical realism.
About the Fellowship: The Fellowship competition is geared towards the completion and presentation of new work; submissions of work-in-progress are acceptable. The competition is open to all photographic, film/video, and lens-based work, including installation. The deadline for the 2011 fellowship will be announced in the fall of 2010, following the annual Juried Members’ Exhibition (deadline: April 1, juror Hannah Frieser, Director, Lightwork).
