Houston, TX - Houston Center is proud to present its 27th Anniversary Juried Membership Exhibition. This year's Juror is Katherine Ware, Curator of Photography, New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe.
 
The exhibition opens on July 10 and continues through August 23, 2009. The opening reception will take place on Friday, July 10 from 6 - 8 p.m. The juror will speak about her selections  starting at 5:30 p.m. in the HCP galleries. All events are free and open to the public.
 

HCP's annual showcase of recent photographic work by its members presents a wide spectrum of approaches to image-making. From over 200 entrants, juror Katherine Ware selected 26 artists to exhibit. Ms. Ware granted Jeffrey Aaronson (Santa Barbara, CA), Beatrix Reinhardt (Astoria, NY), and Ellen Rennard (Groton, MA) Juror Commendation honors.

 
In addition to Ms. Ware's selections, work by all entrants will be screened on a monitor in the exhibition space. Related programming includes a book signing and mini-artist talk series with HCP members including Shelley Calton, whose monograph Hard Knocks: Rolling with the Derby Girls will be released by Kehrer Verlag this summer. HCP's 2nd annual Family Day is scheduled for Sunday, July 26 in conjunction with the exhibition.

Katherine Ware is Curator of Photography at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe. She previously served as Curator of Photographs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where she was co-curator and co-author of Dreaming in Black and White: Photography at the Julien Levy Gallery; served as curator and author of Elemental Landscapes: Photographs by Harry Callahan; and presented shows including Photo Mandalas, The Silver Garden; and The Faceless Figure. Ms. Ware served as Assistant Curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum during the 1990s and organized the traveling exhibition A Practical Dreamer: The Photographs of Man Ray and the exhibition Vision in Motion: The Photographs of László Moholy-Nagy, both with accompanying books. She has also worked with the photography collection atthe Oakland Museum of California and began her career at the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in Washington, D.C. She is a frequent juror and reviewer of contemporary photography and has written essays on the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
