Houston, TX - Houston Center for Photography mourns the loss of our friend and colleague, Leigh Boone, who died on Saturday, April 11th following an arduous battle in ICU. While bicycling to work on March 30th, Leigh was struck when two fire trucks collided at an intersection near her home.
An ardent devotee of visual and performing arts with over seven years of management experience in the field, Leigh joined HCP’s staff as a part time Executive Assistant in January, 2008 and transitioned to full time in January, 2009.
In 2002 following her graduation at UT Austin in theater arts, Leigh toured with various international production companies around the U.S. She moved to New York City to participate in a year-long internship at the Julliard School. Following her internship, she worked in various theaters as stage manager and assistant stage manager, during which time she served as stage manager for The Watermill Center and had an internship role at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. In 2006 following an internship at White Box, a contemporary art space in New York's Chelsea district, Leigh embarked on a career change to the non-profit sector of visual arts, assuming the role of Operations Manager for the organization.
Leigh returned to Houston in 2007 to be closer to family. At the time of her accident, Leigh also worked weekends at Edin, a boutique in Houston’s Montrose area. Well known in the arts community and a friend to many, Leigh was an active volunteer for Lawndale Art Center and a member of DiverseWorks and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and she regularly attended functions at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston.
During her tenure at HCP, Leigh provided Executive Director & Curator Madeline Yale with outstanding administrative, membership, and fundraising support. “Leigh was a brilliant collaborator, helping me to execute the Board’s and my vision for the organization. She consistently provided me with new ideas as to how to effectively build HCP’s community and funding base. Her commitment and enthusiasm was infectious; she greatly helped make HCP an enjoyable and exciting place to work. She was a close friend to all on staff.
While it is devastatingly difficult for all of us to be without her presence and friendship, her warm spirit has left a lasting impression at HCP and on the Houston arts community at large. We send her family and friends our deepest sympathies for their loss,” said Yale.
"The Board of Directors and the entire HCP family have been deeply saddened by this loss. Leigh has played a vital role in the success and spirit of HCP during the past 15 months and she will be sorely missed by all of us. Our hearts go out to her family and to all of those who will miss her bright, wonderful spirit,” noted Dr. Patricia Eifel, President of HCP’s Board of Directors.
Leigh is survived by her mother Linda Zapalac, father Keith Boone, brother George and stepbrothers Mario and Michael. She will also be missed by her two cats, Roxy and Lulu.
