Houston, TX – The Houston Center for Photography Annual Carol Crow Fellowship Exhibition will be on view June 13 – July 13, 2008, with an artist talk on Friday, June 13 from 5pm - 6pm followed by the opening reception from 6pm - 8pm. The 2008 Carol Crow Fellowship was juried by Anjali Gupta, critic videographer and Editor-in-Chief of ArtLies and Rachel Cook, artist, curator and art consultant.
Since 1983, HCP has awarded more than $54,000 in grants to emerging artists to complete works-in-progress as part of the organization’s mission to deepen the understanding and appreciation of the photographic arts. The Carol Crow Memorial Fellowship Fund was founded in 1998 by the late photographer’s family and friends. Past recipients of HCP’s Fellowship include Amy Blakemore, Osamu James Nakagawa, Will Michels, Ann Stautberg, Dornith Doherty, and Colin Zelt. The Carol Crow Memorial Fellowship is awarded to an artist living within a 100-mile radius of Houston (including the Beaumont, Galveston, and College Station areas).
Mary Magsamen and Stephan Hillerbrand are the recipients of the 2008 Carol Crow Memorial Fund Fellowship award, comprising of a $2,000 cash award and a solo exhibition at HCP. As a husband and wife collaborative team based in Houston, they will present a new work titled Forced Fields, an experimental video installation that explores ideas about the pressures of daily life through playful use of the children’s toy, an inflatable balloon.
Using balloons as an alternative material to project into, onto and around, the image transforms into mesmerizing spheres of personal and psychological interaction. The balloon, filled with the artists’ own air, becomes a thin, transparent membrane that is simultaneously delicate, mutable and explosive. It is a lens that examines not only the role of the photographic image but our lives as well.
