Digital Lab

HCP’s Digital Lab offers a professional working environment for photographic studies and artistic production.

Services & Availabiltiy

The Digital Lab is currently open to HCP members, students, and instructors only.

Using the lab, image-makers can:

  • Edit and process their images in a color-calibrated environment

  • Produce beautiful archival inkjet prints (up to 44” wide)

  • Scan negatives, positives, and prints

Reservations are required (see below) during available operating hours.

Starting January 2024, HCP Digital Lab hours will be extended to include:

  • Monday - 10am-5pm

  • Tuesday - 2pm-6pm

  • Wednesday - 11am-6pm

  • Thursday - 10am-6pm

  • Friday - 10am-4pm

  • Saturday - 11am-1pm

  • Sunday - 11am-7pm

Notes:

  • HCP reserves the right to adjust opening hours based on administrative constraints, especially during exhibition changeover.

  • Support during evening hours and weekends is limited to supplying printing ink and fixing malfunctioning hardware.

Reservations

Important: Lab users are expected to have the knowledge/experience needed to independently operate the equipment they reserve. HCP members new to the Digital Lab must complete the Digital Lab Crash Course before the date of their reservation.

HCP members can reserve online lab stations, printers, and scanners at least 24 hours in advance. Reservations are available in 2-hour blocks at a usage fee of $10/hour.

Same-day reservations may be allowed after receiving confirmation over the phone.
Reservations can be refunded only if canceled at least 6 hours before the reserved time.

Supplies & Costs

Printing Paper
Lab users need to bring their own paper for printing.
The Digital Lab supports printing on paper sheets or roll paper (up to 44” wide).

Ink Usage
HCP charges only 4¢ / sq. inch for ink usage. Lab users need to fill out a Log Sheet (available in the lab) at the end of their visit and complete the payment for their prints (including tests) after approval using the button below.

Equipment

The Digital Lab features 8 Apple Mac Mini workstations (all installed with a standard configuration) equipped with the following:

  • 24-inch wide-gamut self-calibrating Eizo ColorEdge monitors

  • 17-inch Epson SureColor P800 printer for archival inkjet printing

  • Adobe Creative Cloud application suite (Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Premiere Pro, InDesign, Illustrator, etc)

  • A wide selection of paper profiles for Canson, Hahnemühle, Ilford Galerie (P800 only), Moab, Museo, and Red River papers (P800 paper profiles↗︎ | 9900 paper profiles↗︎)

  • The helpful HCP Printing Guide which offers detailed step-by-step instructions


In addition, lab users have access to:

  • A 44-inch Epson Stylus Pro 9900 printer for large archival inkjet printing

  • An Epson V850 Pro flatbed scanner - 6400 dpi optical resolution (prints and film)
