The Learning Center Classes

About Face: Taking Dynamic Portraits

In this course, students will explore and consider several approaches to creating compelling portraits. The class will take a philosophical look at what a portrait is and define it collectively as the foundation for discussions. Selections from key historic and contemporary portrait photographers will be examined, and various styles in portraiture will be assigned as weekly exercises. Students will experiment with both available (natural) and DIY solutions for lighting. Participants will start developing their own style(s) and determine when and how to use different approaches to create meaningful portraits.

Attention: This class has been moved online in response to the growing impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Please register as you normally would, and Houston Center for Photography staff will update you with information and a link to take this course at it’s scheduled time.
