Contemporary Photography of Latin America

In April 2019, Houston will be celebrating LatinX art by hosting LAN! (Latino Art Now!). This city-wide effort is Latino-run and Latino-focused–unlike any other event in Houston or nationally. What is LatinX art, and why is it important to photography? This lecture and discussion course will use the exhibitions at HCP and neighboring venues to dig deeper into the social, cultural, and political contexts of the artists–and their impact on the medium of photography. Students will leave with a more comprehenssive understanding of the ways in which LatinX artists from the Americas and the US have critically explored and reshaped the medium since the mid-1960s. Part art history, part art criticism, this course if for anyone at any level of experience.
