Using the HCP library’s extensive collection as a starting point, this course will present an overview of the photobook as a form that evolved from merely a way to bind an artist’s work together to a standalone, unique form of photographic expression that has its own narrative possibilities, formal conventions, and identity independent of the printed exhibition photograph. Students will be introduced to a range of forms, such as the artist monograph and exhibition catalog, but the course will emphasize project-driven and conceptual artist’s books.
