SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Houston Center for Photography’s Words & Pictures Lecture Series is excited to bring together Sasha Wolf\, independent curator and lecturer\, and Malcolm Daniel\, the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography at Museum of Fine Arts Houston\, in a virtual conversation on the topic of her recently-published book\, PhotoWork: Forty Photographers on Process and Practice. Across forty Q&A-style interviews\, Wolf poses the same set of questions about photographic approach to forty leading photographers working in the field today\, including Alejandro Cartagena\, Robert Adams\, LaToya Ruby Frazier\, and Justine Kurland. This conversation will interrogate key insights and discoveries revealed through this impressive cross-section of living artists. \n\n\n\nAbout the Guests \nSasha Wolf represents emerging and midcareer fine-art photographers as a private practice\, following a decade of running Sasha Wolf Gallery. Prior to her work in the fine-art photography world\, Wolf was a writer\, director\, and producer in the film and television industries. Her short film Joe (1997) was nominated for the Palme d’Or du court métrage at Cannes. \nMalcolm Daniel is the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston. He was previously the Senior Curator and Curator in Charge of Photographs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and is one of the world’s preeminent curators of 19th-century photography. \n\nIMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note audio\, video\, and other information sent during this Zoom session may be recorded. SUMMARY:HCP Annual Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dear HCP Member\, \nDuring these unusual times\, when we are separated physically from our community\, we are reminded of just how vital photography is to our sense of connection to each other and the world around us. Creating community through our membership program is at the core of HCP’s mission\, and every year we ask all of you to join us – the staff and the Board of Directors – to come together to celebrate our recent successes and to look to the future by voting on new Board Members. \nSince we cannot gather together in our gallery space\, we invite you to join us online for our Annual Members’ Meeting and a virtual happy hour. In addition to voting on the next slate of Board Members\, we will provide an open forum to discuss how we’ve shifted our programs online during this pandemic as well as what the immediate future holds. \nThank you for your unwavering commitment to HCP.  We look forward to “seeing” you virtually\, and celebrating 39 years of connecting people with photography! \nTo virtually attend the meeting\, please register below. Upon registering\, you will receive a confirmation email for instructions to access the Zoom meeting\, which you can join through a computer or smartphone. For more information about accessing the zoom meeting\, click here. \nRegister\n  \nFor more questions about your membership or the virtual meeting\, please contact: info@hcponline.org \nIMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note audio\, video\, and other information sent during this Zoom session may be recorded. SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Hue and Saturate
DESCRIPTION:Please join Houston Center for Photography for the opening reception of Hue and Saturate\, an exhibition of works by Daniel Gordon\, on Friday\, September 13\, 2019 from 5:30-8pm. Curator remarks begin at 6pm. \n  \nHue and Saturate brings together 11 works from New York-based artist\, Daniel Gordon\, for his first solo exhibition in Houston. Often described in the style of Matisse’s cut-outs or Cezanne’s still lifes\, Gordon’s work uses shape\, color\, and size to playfully disrupt our ideas about medium-specificity\, artifice\, and photography in the age of the internet. Born in 1980\, Gordon is squarely positioned in a pre and post-internet world. His tableaus break down classical objects found in still lifes into constructed forms and in some cases trace references\, shadows\, and pixels of flora\, fauna\, produce\, and tableware. This emphasis on the digital construction of the image has a hide-and-seek characteristic throughout this show\, alternating between explicitly revealing itself and tucking itself into painterly compositions of paper objects. While Matisse or Cezanne’s work might refer more to the shift from objective to subjective perception through the construction of the painted form\, Gordon’s use of pattern\, repetition and digital imaging illustrates the deconstruction and reconstitution of form from one reality or plane to another. \nLearn More
