Although we all hope to be able to gather again in-person very soon\, this year’s Members’ Meeting will be held virtually on Thursday\, May 27\, 2021\, at 6:00 pm. \nAs part of the meeting\, we are excited to introduce you to Dorota Biczel\, who will be starting as HCP’s new Executive Director and Curator on June 1. In addition to voting on the next slate of Board Members\, we will provide an open forum to discuss how HCP’s programs have shifted and evolved as we continue to pursue our mission without compromising the safety of our staff and members. DESCRIPTION:T.V. to See the Sky \nInspired by Yoko Ono’s work\, SKY T.V. \nJune 21\, 2021\, beginning at sunrise 5:42AM Pacific Standard Time and continuing for 24 hours\nThis event is inspired by Yoko Ono’s second conceptualization of SKY T.V. in 1967 for the Lisson Gallery\,\nwhich she described as “a T.V. just to see the sky. Different channels for different skies\, high-up sky\, low\nsky\, etc.” SKY T.V. 1966 (furniture piece) was a video sculpture described by Ono as “a closed circuit T.V.\nset up in the gallery for looking at the sky”. It broadcasts a live video feed of the sky from above the\nbuilding where it was installed—a way to bring the sky inside\, even if a space lacked windows. In\ncollaboration with Yoko Ono\, the Getty Research Institute and the Feminist Center for Creative Work will present a 24-hour video streaming of the sky via Zoom. A network of international institutions will\nparticipate in a live broadcast of the sky transmitted to audiences at home. At a time of profound\nrevolution and reflection\, a time of restricted travel but great desire for connection\, we seek to draw\nupon Ono’s invocation of the sky as a space of generative possibility and renewal as well as a territory\nbeyond the reach of capital and ownership. DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to make photographic work about and in a community? What are the ethics of telling others’ stories? How can these stories transcend regional and national borders\, and connect disparate communities? Finally\, what can pictures do\, and what are their limitations? Join HCP’s 2020 Carol Crow Memorial Fellow\, Briana Vargas\, and Mauricio Palos\, award-winning documentalist and cultural promoter\, as they discuss these questions around Centro Cultural Tenexcalco\, where Vargas realized her fellowship body of work\, Dicen. Founded and directed by Palos\, Tenexcalco is located in the rural\, mostly Nahua community in San Luis Potosí in central Mexico. Its work focuses on supporting and strengthening local cultures\, and providing access to creative activities for both Spanish- and Nahuatl-speaking youth.  \nThe conversation will be held in English\, and will be moderated by Dorota Biczel\, HCP’s new Executive Director and Curator.  \nArchived conversation will be available for viewing on HCP’s Vimeo page.  \nRegister Here\n  \nAbout Briana Vargas & Dicen \nFor her body of work Dicen\, Briana Vargas photographed communities around December 12\, the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe\, in la Huasteca Potosina\, a rural region in Mexico’s state of San Luis Potosi. The Virgin of Guadalupe\, a ubiquitous symbol in Latin America\, is for Vargas also an evocation of her own roots. She has observed that young people may not be as familiar with the legends that have been passed down from generation to generation\, but the symbol of the Virgin is a constant. Other symbols abound in Vargas’s images. There are ladders\, stone steps\, and spiral staircases\, which have practical uses (to reach the trees’ fruits during harvest time\, for example)\, but also connect our earthly world with the sacred world above. The series also includes a number of two-part photographs\, in which two exposures have been brought together\, side-by-side\, into one composition\, to create a surreal or enigmatic new image. Briana is the recipient of the Carol Crow Memorial Fellowship. \nAbout Mauricio Palos \nMauricio Palos  (born 1981 San Luis Potosí\, Mexico) Documentalist and cultural promoter\, works mainly in North and South America. \nHis work explores a variety of topics related to human rights\, historical memory related to political crises and land conflicts. His first book My Perro Rano\, Chronicles of Central America\, was published in 2010 by Editorial RM with the support of the Ford Foundation and the National Fund for Arts and Culture in Mexico. My Perro explores the causes that drive millions of Central American immigrants to search for a better life by embarking on one of the most dangerous trips to be made in the Americas\, the book was chosen as one of the best photobooks of 2011 by the British Journal of Photography. \n

What even are the intermedia? How does an intermediatic approach alter customary expectations of distance and intimacy in photography? Artist Elizabeth Bick and HCP’s Executive Director and Curator\, Dorota Biczel\, discuss Bick’s practice informed by her training in modern dance. At the core of Bick’s work are relationships between architecture\, urban fabric\, movement\, and image\, and what it ultimately means to be a body in space.  \nArchived conversation will be available for viewing on HCP’s Vimeo page.  \nRegister Here\n  \nAbout Elizabeth Bick’s Movement Studies \nAfter a childhood dedicated to dance\, Elizabeth Bick found a choreographic voice through photography. Movement Studies is a three-volume work that portrays a gridded  anonymous street\, a chosen corner\, and finally\, one individual. Movement Study I is a distant\, peering typology study of patterned movement in occupied transient urban landscapes. Through this scavenger hunt\, Movement Study II\, a temporary construction facade\, and a populated pedestrian corner was discovered and photographed for years. Movement Study III is dedicated to B Hawk\, whom\, by chance\, Bick photographed at the location of Movement Study II\, and then exclusively photographed them as they underwent gender transition. The work operates vertically and cyclically\, narrowing a perception of the urban experience. Elizabeth is the recipient of the 2020 HCP Fellowship.
