SUMMARY:Lecture and Book Signing: Mike Osborne’s Federal Triangle
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 26\, 7:00pm – 8:00pm \nHouston Center for Photography is pleased to present a lecture and book signing with Austin-based photographer\, Mike Osborne\, discussing his recent body of work\, Federal Triangle. Titled after a government complex wedged between the Capitol and the White House\, Osborne’s work depicts Washington DC as a kind of bureaucratic Bermuda Triangle—an impenetrable place of mystery\, danger\, and disorientation. \nThe project grew out of the day-to-day experience of living in DC over a period of several years. Banal but intriguing\, and sometimes darkly comical\, these glimpses of power led to a cascade of questions. If a person were particularly prone to paranoid projections\, what kinds of encounters might activate his darker conspiratorial fears and fantasies? If one felt especially dispossessed\, what scenes and situations would evoke the paradoxical feeling of being close to yet far removed from the levers of power? \nFederal Triangle engages these kinds of questions in pictorial terms. Everyday scenes are tinged with the possibility of violence and conspiracy. Withholding more than they reveal\, the pictures invite projections that speak to the fear\, doubt\, dysfunction\, and absurdity of the current moment in American political life. \nThis discussion is part of Houston Center for Photography’s ongoing series\, Words & Pictures\, a lecture and conversation series between photographers\, writers\, and thinkers of the medium. \nMike Osborne is a photographer whose work touches on a range of themes including architecture\, landscape\, history\, and technology\, ultimately taking the form of books and exhibitions. His photographs are included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, the Dallas Museum of Art\, the Contemporary Austin\, and the University of Virginia. Federal Triangle\, a project set in Washington\, DC\, will be published by Gnomic Book in 2019. His work has also appeared in publications such as the New Yorker\, Time\, The New York Times\, and The New Republic. \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Tanisha Ford\nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, Tools of Revolution: Fashion Photography and Activism\, Houston Center for Photography presents a lecture by Dr. Tanisha C. Ford on the under-recognized photographic work of Harlem-based\, Civil Rights activist and photographer\, Kwame Brathwaite. Having written extensively about Brathwaite’s work in Kwame Brathwaite: Black Is Beautiful (Aperture\, 2019)\, Dr. Ford’s expertise on the artist combined with her scholarship on fashion and activism will offer our Houston community unique insight into the powerful intertwining histories of the Black Freedom movement and the rise of the global fashion industry. \nDr. Tanisha C. Ford is a foremost voice speaking on the intersection of politics and culture. She is an award-winning writer\, cultural critic\, and Associate Professor of Africana Studies & History at the University of Delaware. A native of a mid-sized Midwestern city most people have never heard of\, Tanisha enjoys telling the histories of often-overlooked people and places. Her commitment to social justice and communities of color is evident in everything she produces. Tanisha’s work centers on social movement history\, feminist issues\, material culture\, the built environment\, black life in the Rust Belt\, girlhood studies\, and fashion\, beauty\, and body politics. She makes connections between the past and the present in ways that shed refreshing new light on contemporary cultural and political issues. Tanisha is the author of three books: the forthcoming Dressed in Dreams: A Black Girl’s Love Letter to the Power of Fashion\, Kwame Brathwaite: Black is Beautiful\, and Liberated Threads: Black Women\, Style\, and the Global Politics of Soul. Her writing and cultural commentary have been featured in diverse media outlets and publications including the New York Times\, the Atlantic\, ELLE.com\, The Root\, Aperture\, CBSNews\, WNYC\, and New York City’s HOT 97. \n  \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Houston Center for Photography’s Words & Pictures Lecture Series is excited to bring together Sasha Wolf\, independent curator and lecturer\, and Malcolm Daniel\, the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography at Museum of Fine Arts Houston\, in a virtual conversation on the topic of her recently-published book\, PhotoWork: Forty Photographers on Process and Practice. Across forty Q&A-style interviews\, Wolf poses the same set of questions about photographic approach to forty leading photographers working in the field today\, including Alejandro Cartagena\, Robert Adams\, LaToya Ruby Frazier\, and Justine Kurland. This conversation will interrogate key insights and discoveries revealed through this impressive cross-section of living artists. \n\n\n\nAbout the Guests \nSasha Wolf represents emerging and midcareer fine-art photographers as a private practice\, following a decade of running Sasha Wolf Gallery. Prior to her work in the fine-art photography world\, Wolf was a writer\, director\, and producer in the film and television industries. Her short film Joe (1997) was nominated for the Palme d’Or du court métrage at Cannes. \nMalcolm Daniel is the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston.
