DESCRIPTION:Samuel (Culture of Health-Advancing Together)\, Untitled\, Inkjet print\, 2018\nHouston Center for Photography’s Access and Community Education (A.C.E.) programs build community and support the organization’s mission of educating and inspiring the public with the art and practice of photography through partnerships with various schools\, community centers\, and medical centers. These programs\, including Picture This!\, stem from an understanding of the camera as a tool for empowerment and expression and meeting individuals where they are\, validating their unique lived experiences. Under the guidance of A.C.E. teaching artists\, participants strengthen visual literacy and critical thinking skills and learn how to use a camera to express themselves and relate to others. \nThis exhibition features works created during fall 2018 programs offered in partnership with Stephen F. Austin High School\, Culture of Health – Advancing Together (CHAT)\, the Periwinkle Arts In Medicine Program at the Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers\, Thought Quotient Agile Learning Community\, and Westchester Academy for International Studies. While each program is unique\, a strong sense of exploration is found throughout many of the works where the camera is used as a tool to closely examine the self or the immediate community and environment. Teens at Stephen F. Austin High School navigate the changing physical structure of their school as they await updates to their historical East End campus while homeschooled teens\, in partnership with Thought Quotient ALC\, independently navigate different facets of the Montrose neighborhood surrounding HCP. Young girls at Westchester Academy for International Studies observe beauty in themselves and the built or natural environment while children at CHAT observe the vibrant and connected community of their modest apartment complex where many recent immigrants live. Lastly\, young patients who are often confined to beds and IV poles at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers\, use the camera and found photographs to create meaning during a time fraught with pain and uncertainty. Importantly\, they are given the opportunity to imagine a world outside of the hospital–a world where they can be a race car driver cruising down the track or a mermaid swimming freely in the ocean. \nUltimately\, learning how to take photographs and to manipulate images challenges and encourages A.C.E. participants to see themselves and their surroundings from many new perspectives\, empowering them to explore the world around them and to share what they find with others. \n–Natalie Rodgers\, Access and Community Education Coordinator & Erin Miller\, Exhibitions and Programs Coordinator

SUMMARY:Rebecca French Choreography Performance: Dancing a Tetrapod
DESCRIPTION:Houston Center for Photography is pleased to present Dancing a Tetrapod\, created by award-winning queer dance choreographer\, Rebecca French. In response to Fumi Ishino’s exhibition\, Rowing a Tetrapod\, dancers will combine elements of traditional Japanese Butoh dance with American dance aesthetics in order to echo Ishino’s staccato shifts and disorienting imagery about moving between cultures. The dancers aim to simultaneously disperse and unite the audience in unfamiliarity\, physically guiding viewers with their movements within the gallery space. The distinct style in which the dancers perform is further enhanced with elaborate costume design and the use of electronic and orchestral sounds. The accompanying music\, ambient yet tonal with a perceptible rhythm at times\, will propel and accentuate the dancer’s movement. \n
