SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Jake Eshelman
DESCRIPTION:Sophia picking berries\, 2019\, HeisykhaArchival digital pigment print 30” x 45”\nJoin us to hear from the Houston-based artist and visual researcher Jake Eshelman about his work on the Ivanchuk family in Heisykha\, Ukraine\, and how this body of work relates to his larger practice. In his global-in-scope work\, Eshelman (b. 1989\, USA) explores the complex relationships between people and other-than-human beings\, most recently between humans and bees. His goal for his documentary practice is to investigate interspecies relationships in industry\, agriculture\, and conservation\, so that we can fully consider our role in ecology.  \nEshelman has exhibited work internationally\, notably at Vantaa Art Museum Artsi in Helsinki\, Finland; The Centre for Research in the Arts\, Social Sciences and Humanities at Cambridge University\, UK; The Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland\, OH; The Corcoran School of the Arts and Design in Washington D.C.; Hume Gallery in Chicago\, IL; and Des Lee Gallery in St. Louis\, MO. His work is in the permanent collection of the Chicago Design Museum and has also been included in independently published photo books\, collaborative artist books\, and even a children’s book by Simon & Schuster encouraging aspiring creatives to pursue artistic careers. He has also been featured in numerous publications including AND2020\, Trouvé Magazine\, Texas Monthly\, The World Sensorium / Conservancy\, and Then There Was Us\, among others.  \nEshelman is currently pursuing his MA in Ecology & Spirituality from The University of Wales\, Trinity Saint David. He holds a BA in Classical Literature\, with a concentration in mythology\, hermeneutics\, and reception theory\, as well a minor in studio art and art history from Trinity University in San Antonio\, TX. He is also a member of The Fairy Investigation Society.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our Exhibition drop-in tours to learn more about the artists and works in our current exhibitions\, and hear the multifaceted stories behind the images! Our Executive Director and Curator\, Dorota Biczel\, will lead a guided tour and answer your questions.  \n  \nThrough Edi Hirose’s work\, you will learn about different ecosystems in Peru\, both modern and premodern forms of extraction\, the hunt for alluvial gold deposits and their impact on the Amazon rainforest\, and the luminous volcanic rock called rhyolite\, among many other topics. \n  \nThrough Jake Eshelman’s work\, you will be introduced to the Ivanchuk family from Heisykha\, Ukraine. The Ivanchuk’s life on their small family farm exemplifies the Ukrainian culture’s deep embeddedness in its lands\, and a profound respect\, love\, and understanding of the Earth. \n
